WEEK 10 (Winny)

How does Buffy deconstruct traditional literary notions of good and evil?

"Both Buffy and The X-Files use sexual tension between various characters to drive the narrative, and both often play with gender roles." (Braum, 2000)

It is impossible to state what is good and evil.  I think Buffy this drama, did quite a good job.  I mean the point that it brings audiences together, to consider about different concepts.  What is good and what is bad?  Like Buffy, she killed her lover Angel.  Someone might say she'd done a great job because others presume what she did was kind of saving the world.  However you can also think differently.  How about the act she killed her lover?  How could she do that?  How could she kill a person(maybe people will just said he's non-human) who just slept with her?  Isn't this cruel?  I agree with the point Braum said that movies and novels always try to differentiate good and evil by sexual relationships.  Maybe these are not just what authors and directors think, almost every one has this kind of concepts.  I think it is always difficult to declare what is good and evil... or in other words, right or wrong.  For example in the Japanese anime One Piece, there is someone saying "The person who wins and stands at the highest position is 'justice'."  I can understand this, because the person who wins has his or her opportunity to do anything he or she wants.  In another words, people who have authority has the right to change things by their own favour.

  1. Hi Winny,
The use of sexual tension between characters is quite common theme these days as it keeps audience interested. As the saying goes sex sells. – it’s a sad world ;/ kk Buffy is a kind of comical nature to the theme of good and evil played out here. There is not too much seriousness to it at all.

Although Buffy killed her boyfriend??, the point of it was evil was defeated and good prevailed :)

Your comment on my blog will be appreciated :)
