KT's Week 9

How does Hill define reality TV?

According to Hill(2005), there is no one definition of reality TV, but if there is one defining characteristic that unites the disparate group of programmes that make up the reality genre it is the capacity to let viewers see for themselves. This unique function of factual TV has become a key attraction for audiences of reality TV. I totally agree to Hill’s key point that the viewers can be part of the reality TV and I also love it because I can dream of being a contestant in the reality TV or I can vote for other contestants. As a matter of fact, reality TV cannot complete without the supporting from the viewers. (In here I said ‘the viewer’ but in some circumstance the viewer may change to a contestant or the main character of the reality TV. To create the reality TV, non-professional actors in the real situation are required.) I think this is why the reality TV is getting popular.

  1. A good intiatl response - but it could have been useful to expand on this more, perhaps including references to Reality Shows currently on TV that fit Hill's defintion. This might help you provide more concrete examples of what Hill means by "let viewers see for themselves".It's important you make reference to the primary texts. Also it can be quite helpful to use direct quotes from the theoretical texts to develop/support your discussions.

  2. Hi Katie!

Yes I do agree that reality TVs, especially game shows bring audiences together simply by inviting them to be one of the members. Audiences are extremely important for reality shows.

  3. Hay Katie, good post but I will have to agree with Darryl. Maybe you could have expanded on the definition with some examples? I think you brought up a good point that the most attractive part of reality TV is the fact that the people on them are seemingly ordinary and this gives them a relatability of sorts.
