How do you think Buffy has influenced the contemporary vampire drama “True Blood” and the “Twilight” series of novels and films?
Although Buffy the Vampire Slayer is a very unique idea and a very successful television series, it still fits into a very broad category of other successful series that share a similar theme and idea. The idea of the supernatural existing within our own societies seems to have always been a popular theme in the construction of some television series.
"One does not have to look far within the history of television to find other examples. Warner Bros. may only be following the lead of other popular shows such as the long running X-Files, which in turn may have been influenced by the likes of The Twilight Zone. Other early examples of the genre include series such as Bewitched and I Dream of Jeannie."
Today we have a lot of supernatural programs that have very clearly been influenced by shows of the past. One cannot help but notice the name similarity between the vampire Twilight series and The Twilight Zone. Another unmistakable similarity between Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Twilight is the relationship between Buffy and Angel versus Bella and Edward. Angel and Edward are both cursed vampire characters who vow to change their ways to be with and protect the girl that they love.
Another way Buffy the Vampire Slayer seems to have influenced the series True Blood is in sexuality. The Buffy series started off a trend with supernatural shows having a very sexual theme. The vampire characters are always very sexual and charismatic.
