Ged's Adventure I
/‘That’s the ONLY source that could restore your father’s ailing health, that’s the ONLY one…” / echoed Ged’s ears as the voice disappeared in the air.
Ged pawed over the sacred scroll recovered from the Temple of Andrad. The scroll, given by Ogion, showed a clearing in the forest in the very northern island marked out by a set of stones forming concentric circles. Ged had had little sleep and was being hounded by the darkness of the shadow that followed him.
“No, I will not let you go, you won’t be able to get you out of there.” His a year-long girl friend, Di, moaned as she looked at his eyes deeply.
“I know, your father is…, but we will find alternative medicine, Ged.” She said so, but she knew he wouldn’t listen.
/… / he would give her no answer.
He recalled the voice of Ogion and knew this was his one chance to reciprocate his father. That was the one driving force that pushed Ged to continue on his journey.
It had been seven nights and nine days of constant travelling to make it to his destination at the Thorsips of Tunis forest. He pulled out the diamond necklace given to him by his witch aunt.
/“Never loose it, never…”/ her bird voice was trembling.
The giant red oaks imposed themselves on Ged and made him feel small and insignificant. It was the first time Ged had questioned his existence. He stood and raised his arms to the sky.
“Oh GREAT spirits of the forest, I am overcome by your power.” His loud voice echoing through the forest.
“I ask for your power to guide me.” He continued.
It was at that moment a bright light, brighter than the light of the sun surrounded him. The light grew stronger and stronger, and he had to cover his eyes with his hands to block it. In an instant, the light was gone.
/Uh! Was it a illusion?!/ Ged stood in a dimly lit space, what looked like the inside of a log cabin. A stone fireplace had a roaring fire lit. An armchair positioned by the fire had an aging figure of an old woman sitting in it, with a long grey hair and nonchalant look.
“I am the spirit of the northsea in the Earthsea.” she opened her mouth.
“I am the one who waits, and watches and listens to those who pass through here.” she said as smirked.
“You have come seeking something. You have come to seek the grail that is the elixir of life.”
“How can you know this ?!” asked Ged as he frown with all parts of his face.
“I have been thrown out from the sea. It was a curse by Peagote of Groth.” Said the old woman instead of answering the quest.
“We know, for you spoke and we listened. You summoned the power of the forest and we rose from our dwelling. We are the spirits of this forest”, replied the old woman.
“Can you tell me where then is the grail ?’’, spoke Ged.
Suddenly from the mouth of the old woman came the mighty roar of many voices laughing at once, as if from an audience of a thousand people.
‘’Why do you laugh at my request ?, It is my intention to entertain you.” Ged says.
“I am laughing not at you but with joy, the joy of giving the grail to the one who seeks it”. The old woman replies.
/Phew…/ Ged sighed in his head at the relief that he finally had found the grail and at that moment a great burden was lifted from his shoulders.
“But before I can pass the grail to you, you must complete a quest”. The old woman spoke.
“First, you must defeat the beast. The Peagote of Groth is a multi-headed beast which breathes the fire of a dragon and its tail contains the sting of a scorpion.
You must defeat the Peagote and remove its heart. The heart is the keeper of it’s secret and it knows the whereabouts of the grail. The heart will reveal all. But do not remove the heart before it’s last beat. The heart must be beating when removed. Only then can the heart reveal its secret”.
Ged had come this far and was not about to give up now. ‘I’ll accept the challenge’ Ged says courageously.
‘Then so shall it be revealed”. The old woman replies.
Instantly, Ged was transported back into the Thorsips of Tunis, and back in the clearing of the forest where he stood previously. In his hand he held a mightly double-edged blade, finely forged. From the edge of the clearing came an awesome roar. It was the Peagote of Groth, a fearsome looking beast. The beast advancing on Ged raised its tail preparing to strike with its scorpion tipped end. Ged dived as it came slamming into the earth. The fight between Ged and the peagote carried on for thirty minutes. Suddenly, the sharp tipped end of the tail mightily hit Ged’s left thigh. He was dropped down to the ground and faced to the sky as he bleeds. All faces he loves and admires gone with the air, one after one, except the face of his father.
/I can’t lose my dad after my mum/ Ged uttered in his mind.
/”uh…dad, I love you more than you’ll ever know.”/ his tears rolled down side his cheek and dropped to the diamond necklace lying on the rough grass.
/”That’s the ONLY source that could restore your father’s ailing health, your father…”/ the voice of Ogion bounced one island to another, from south to north, from the sky to deep down in the sea. It shook the earth.
“rawrrrrr, rawrrrrrr” the beast loudly groaned.
But before the peagote, in an attempt to render a deathly blow to Ged with its stinger, got it caught in a mighty red oak trunk. It screeched and roared and struggled trying to free itself. Ged seizing this opportunity jumped on the back of the peagote. And with one powerful sweep of his blade separated the heads of the peagote from its body. He then turned around and with a mighty swing removed the tail of the beast. Then he jumped down from the beast and cut out its still beating heart. With the heart still beating, suddenly one of the heads came to life and tried to attack Ged. At that point Ged thrust his blade in the heart of the beast. The little life that the head had was extinguished. Then came a steady trail of blood from the heart of the beast. A trail of the blood moved along a line away from the heart and slowly formed a ring around one of the rocks surrounding the clearing in the forest. Ged walked over to the rock and began to examine it from all sides. He then tried lifting the rock, but it was far too heavy. Using a spell he had learned at Roke, he was just able to just raise the rock above ground and shift it away from its resting place.
Below in the spot where the rock once lay shone a beam of light, Ged dug the earth away revealing more of this light, and then he found it ! He had found the grail, that elixir of life ! With no time wasting, Ged summoned the forest once more for the power to help him return with speed to his father’s bedside. All of a sudden a great eagle landed in front of Ged and flapped its wings. Wasting no time, Ged climbed on the back of the eagle and it soared into the sky.
